GRADUATION CAKE

Two of my Soul Sister's daughters are graduating from high school and I was asked to make a cake for the graduation party.
It was such a fun cake to do - a whimsical white, orange and black (school colors) for two fun, beautiful young ladies.
The toppers were made by a family member out of polymer clay - aren't they amazing?!
Glass apothecary jars held orange, black and gold candies, there was a table of food and an Italian soda bar.  The house was full of family and friends to celebrate this huge milestone.
On a side note - This photo is of me and my sister.  She came over and helped me with the cake.  This photo was taken in the wee hours and we were a little giggly.

PS - I think it looks like my mouth should be in a denture commercial.

PUT A BIRD ON IT

Stephanie and I decorated a cake for a surprise baby shower for Dani. Purple hibiscus', that Stephanie cut out free hand, and we put a bird on it. Two actually, a mama and a baby.

A TARDIS, NOT A TORTOISE

Three of my siblings have birthdays within days of each other. My youngest brother, Derek, is in town this weekend so we decided to celebrate all three birthdays. My sister called to see if I'd help her make a blue tortoise cake. Of course I said yes, but I was thinking, "I didn't know she liked tortoises so much to want a tortoise birthday cake. And why would she want one blue? It must be a character from some anime show she likes."

When she arrived, I found out I had misunderstood. She wanted a blue tardis - a Dr. Who tardis.
NOT a blue tortoise!
Stephanie drew out the plans and cut the cake.
We made the fondant and buttercream and meticulously cut the detail pieces.
It was time to assemble and the first piece was falling apart with every stroke. The more we tried to fix it, the worse it got.
We put all the pieces in the freezer and tried again. Nope, it was just a big, hot mess.
We decided to make rice krispies. It looked like it was going to work perfectly! We thought for just a second to let the krispie tardis set up just a little bit longer, but six hours into this project we just wanted it done!
Back to the fondant we went, rolling, wetting and sticking until we had it looking decent. The weight of the fondant on the, not completely set, rice krispies made our tall tardis, a stocky tardis - but it's still cute.
We made planets to hold the 33 candles, and tonight when the family is over for the three cake birthday celebration, the tardis all ablaze will look fantastic!

LARRY IS TURNING 40

on Sunday, so we are celebrating for a few days.
My sister and I made him a retro LongBoardLarry Humu cake.
Larry will see it when we celebrate with our family Saturday.... I think he's going to be really surprised!
If you're wondering why I blogged it if it is a surprise, it's because he's so busy right now, he doesn't have time to check my blog!
Hee, hee, hee - I can't wait.....

COACH PURSES ARE A PASSION

for Aunt Mary, so it was only fitting that a Coach Handbag be the cake for our birthday girl.
Stephanie and I went to work and created this Lemon Poppyseed fondant cake for her birthday party....
Happy birthday Mary, we love you!

A MEMBER OF MY MAN CLAN IS TURNING

5 on Saturday, so sister power was activated tonight. We're a great team and like to burn the midnight oil.
Inspiration for the cake came from this post, but I used this fondant recipe..

Last night I made the fondant and let it set up overnight.
Then earlier today I made two 9x13 cakes, layered them with buttercream frosting and cut them into a number 5....
Tonight, many dye jobs later, much like my sister's hair, we had a multi color assortment of fondant shapes....

Fondant was smoothed on the cake and shapes were put into place. It's hard to tell with this lighting, but the base fondant color is sky blue...

Our finished product is a cake that will surprise the birthday boy.

We just hope he isn't disappointed it isn't Luigi on top - his favorite but he was sold out.
It would have taken me FOREVER to finish this cake, (my first solo after this class), thanks Steph for all your help - you are the best mushroom maker!!....
