IN 1967, HE WAS ONLY 19 AND

stationed on an aircraft carrier that was visiting Japan. At the Navy Exchange in Sasebo, he purchased a complete set of white china with a silver trim for his stateside bride, who had told him she would love china as a wedding gift. He was prepared for the wedding, only to soon find out he had 20 minutes to write his finance a letter to tell her, that because of the war, the wedding date had to be changed. He wasn't going to be able to come home for at least another month. One by one, the dishes broke over the years. It was never the fault of any of their six children. These three serving pieces are the only pieces left of the china wedding gift that the groom gave his bride.

Magical post. Poignant. Sweet. Amazing what story a few photos and well-chosen words will tell.

I think it was the older three that broke the dishes because I sure don't remember breaking any :-)

Love the post and pictures Laura!

I think your dad knows what he can get your mom for their next big anniversary! :)

So, was it just a month until they could get married, or did they have to wait much longer?

Charlene, the wedding was only postponed 43 days. :-)

Weren't those the plates that would arc when we put them in the microwave?

Yes! And, I remember burning my fingers quite a few times on the edges.
