HELP! TELL ME WHAT TO DO!

I try to conquer my fears by facing them.
I was afraid of dark water, so I became a certified scuba diver so I would know what was underneath me. I love scuba diving! I was afraid of heights, so I went skydiving - twice. I loved it! And, if it wasn't so expensive I'd love to be a certified skydiver.
You know me well if you know I'm scared of DOGS.
Last weekend my brother and sister-in-law had their dog with them. I was very proud of myself for how I was around her and I even pet her. My man clan fell head over heals in love with Mary Jane. She's all they talk about. Our oldest told us he'd rather have a dog than a car - that was a shock to hear!
So here's the dilemma:Meet 6 week old Lily. She meets every criteria on our list BUT:
1. We'd have to drive 13 hours to pick her up.
2. She would take every cent of my stash for home improvements.
3. She'd be here in 2 weeks.

I know my man clan would be ecstatic but I can't decide what to do. I can't decide if it's my fear talking to me or that my home improvement stash would be empty. I need to decide quickly because I have to put a deposit down so she's reserved for us.
What do you think?

Tough call. The fact that your teenager said he would rather have a dog than a car is pretty bold. On the other hand, a puppy is like having a newborn again. I don't know what to tell you. That is one cute puppy!

Dogs are wonderful, amazing creatures and I can't imagine my life without them. I didn't have a dog in college and it killed me. As soon as I was in a place where I could have one, I got one. Now I have two and I wish I could have more.

Just make sure you do your research and get the RIGHT dog. Different breeds have VASTLY different personalities. Find a personality that fits you and your family. The worst thing you can do is get a dog that doesn't fit with you and your family and then give it up. You wouldn't give up a baby you adopted, so don't treat a dog that way. He/she will be part of your family.

Good luck!

PS: Boxers are the best and the rest of the bully breeds are a close second. :o)

Is it the same kind as MaryJane? You have to be sure, sure, sure before you commit. It would be like bringing a new baby home (it is a baby!!) It's going to be like having a curious toddler.....remember they are cute and need lots of love and patience. GO FOR IT!! ;)

Mary Jane has this effect on people! Here is what I think...I agree w/ Kenny that you have to do your research. I also agree w/ him that dogs are amazing. Somedays, I even like Mary Jane more than my own children. Lol! She definitly listens better! I don't know if that's because she is a dog or a girl??? Probably both. Anyway, I never thought I would have a dog either. Not because I was scared of them. More because I saw them as WORK. That's why I waited till my life was slow (slow for me), and I am glad I did. They are alot of work. Potty trainning, teaching tricks, teething, exercising, bathing, grooming, finding babysitters, the whole nine but if you buck down and are super disiplined and follow through it's worth all the work! Now @ 7 months old. she listens (like I said better than my own children and alot of adults I know).Oh, I have to touch on the $...food, treats, chew toys, crate (if you crate train),bedding, coller, front line, pooper scooper, getting her fixed, shots, chipped, grooming, unexpected vet visits...I know this all sounds familier probably because the closest thing to owning a dog is having a child. That goes for the love too! I can now say I will never NOT have a dog. I think I speak for the boys and Paul on that aswell. Hope that helps a little. She is adorable! I don't like that they already named her though...lame...(I would name her LOVE... because her little nose is shaped like a heart). If she is a cotton de tulear make sure you get all the paper work on her.

One more thing...Hide all the under-roos in the house!! You will soon own a pantie bandit!

She sure is cute, Laura. I'm amazed that you're even considering it. If you put the deposit down on her and then you decide once you meet her in person that she's not the dog for you - can you get your money back? That would be my only concern. I've not bought a pet without holding it and spending some time with it first.

Puppies are A LOT of work - which is one of the reasons I stick with kitties. But, having a pet is so wonderful. They become such a huge part of your family!

Good luck. Keep us posted on your decision.

WOW!!! I'm shocked!!! What great news! But I agree with all the other posters...a puppy is a HUGE undertaking. It truly is like having another baby. Lily is absolutely adorable but I would encourage you to look for a puppy locally that you can go visit before you decide. They all have such different personalities and I think it's important for you to choose one that you bond with right away (and bonds with you). Second, while a puppy is just so much fun a grown dog (that doesn't want to chew on everything, you and the boys included) may be a better start for you, Laura. I'd take a little trip to the Humane Society...also, wouldn't put such a dent in the house fund. Look at this little guy - http://www.petango.com/Adopt/Dog-Chihuahua-Short-Coat-Mix-11656819. You can go there and take him out in the yard to play first...speaking of yards, is yours fenced? Going to need that first....
I'm so excited for you! I always knew you could conquer your fear of dogs if you really wanted too ;-) Keep us posted!

I don't know!
My kids want a dog soooo bad...and I am the only thing holding us back!
I have my hands full...and I am afraid the dog would tip my scale.
I have been a strong NO!
Then we were at the park yesterday, and a man with his dog came, and just let the kids play with him. For some strange reason, I have not been able to stop thinking about a dog for my kids!
But I dont want one!
What do I do????
I can't figure it out for myself...so I am not going to be any help on this problem!

I love Lairds response!
How cute that he reads your blog!

I like your moms comment, you have to know for sure if your ready for it. If it will make the house happy it may be great. If you makes you stressed it may be not so great. When mom's not happy, no one is.:)

As far as the purchase goes, I always say, with ANYTHING, give it time. If you feel rushed to buy something, don't do it, especially big purchases. Think about it and sleep on it for at least 2 weeks before any big purchases.

I love all the advice, and I know it is a done deal. I love the puppy, and your boys will too. I can see Lach following a puppy like a puppy. He will not be able to get enough of Lilly. I bet his bed gets picked as Lilly's bed. I am excited for your boys.
